The ShinyHunters hacking group has released a substantial amount of data from Florida's motor vehicle database after the state agency failed to meet their ransom demands. The breach, confirmed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), involved the theft of hundreds of thousands of files containing sensitive information.

According to TechCrunch, the hackers accessed the database, known as DAVID, earlier in September. They published the stolen data on their leak site, citing the agency's non-compliance with their demands as the reason. A screenshot allegedly showing a record associated with Jeffrey Epstein was posted as evidence of the breach.

The stolen data includes certificates of vehicle ownership records, which contain the names and addresses of vehicle buyers and sellers, as well as vehicle identification numbers. A smaller portion of the files also contained Social Security numbers and other government-issued documents, such as non-U.S. passports and immigration papers. However, the breach did not appear to include driver's licenses or personal photographs.

FLHSMV confirmed the breach in a statement last week, attributing the unauthorized access to a police officer's credentials stored on a personal device. Despite the confirmation, the agency did not respond to TechCrunch's request for further comment on the published data.

This incident occurs in the same month as another significant breach at identity verification company IDScan, where hackers stole over 150 million images of driver's licenses. These events highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in data security and the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks.

A spokesperson for the ShinyHunters group stated, "We published the data because the victim did not pay a ransom or cooperate and comply with our demands." The breach underscores the risks associated with storing sensitive information and the potential consequences of failing to secure it adequately.
