Noah Woods Died After Leaving Playground Through Fence Gap

A three-year-old boy who died in a Suffolk village pond left a playground through a gap in a fence before wandering into nearby water, an inquest heard, according to the BBC. Noah Woods went missing in Brantham on Sept. 15 and was found dead the next day by police divers.

Assistant coroner Jyoti Gill opened and adjourned the inquest in Ipswich, calling it a "very sad and tragic death," the BBC reported.

How Did Noah Leave the Playground?

Det. Ch. Insp. Matt Connick of Suffolk Police told the court that CCTV footage showed Noah in the play area being cared for by a relative as "part of a normal routine," the BBC reported. Noah then left the playground through a gap in an internal fence leading into an adjoining memorial garden, Connick said. From there, he exited the garden through an open gate.

The relative followed closely behind and shouted out to Noah, who lived in neighboring East Bergholt, but the boy went out of sight shortly afterward, according to the BBC's account of the hearing.

Noah ran down a path on a new housing estate toward Decoy Pond, the inquest heard. Another man joined the search before police were called, Connick told the court. Volunteers who took part in the search were told at the time that Noah was non-verbal and partially deaf, the BBC reported.

The scale of the search that followed drew significant local attention in Brantham before Noah's body was recovered from the pond the following day.

Brantham Parish Council, which maintains the play area at Merriam Close, said in a statement carried by the BBC that it was "deeply saddened by Noah's death and our thoughts remain with his family and all those affected at this extremely difficult time."

The council confirmed there was "a break in the internal fencing, being constructed to separate the play area from the memorial garden," but said the entire Merriam Close site, including both the play area and the memorial garden, is "completely enclosed by appropriate perimeter fencing." The council added it would "co-operate fully with any investigation" and, with inquiries ongoing, did not consider it appropriate to comment further, according to the BBC.

The statement leaves open the question of how the internal fencing gap was created and whether it was linked to construction work at the site, a point the coroner's ongoing inquiry is expected to examine.

The family said Noah had gone to the park with a "treasured relative" every Tuesday since he was born, and that the pair "had the most wonderful relationship," playing chase and exploring the play equipment together.

The tribute said Noah was being assessed for autism, though he had not received a diagnosis, and that he had mild hearing loss and was speech delayed. "Despite the challenges he faced, he was learning every day," the family said, adding he was saying new words.

Noah's mother urged other parents to "hold their children a little tighter and cherish every moment," according to the tribute reported by the BBC.

The inquest remains adjourned, with the parish council saying it will cooperate with any investigation into how the boy was able to leave the enclosed play area through the internal fence gap.
