NC House Candidate's Smiling Dachau Photo Draws Scrutiny
Joe Getty criticizes NC House candidate Shelly Haddon for a smiling photo at Dachau's crematorium ovens with a caption mocking Trump supporters, in this week's 'Those Wacky Democrats' segment.
A Democratic candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives posted a smiling photograph of herself in front of the crematorium ovens at the former Dachau concentration camp site in Germany, with a caption suggesting that is where Trump supporters belong, according to Joe Getty. Getty identified the candidate as Shelly Haddon and said her campaign website describes her bid as an effort to restore human decency.
Getty said he has visited Dachau himself and approached the site differently. "Trust me, when I was there, I was not looking for opportunities for partisan humor as I contemplated man's horrific inhumanity to man," he said.
Jack Armstrong asked whether the camp has a gift shop that sells t-shirts. Getty said no, but that there is a bookstore on site intended for visitors who want to learn more about what happened there.
North Carolina House races are decided district by district, and it will be up to voters in Haddon's district to weigh the photo against the rest of her campaign. No response from Haddon's campaign is included here; the characterization of the photo and caption comes solely from Getty's on-air description.
The segment, part of a recurring feature the hosts call "Those Wacky Democrats," also touched on a Florida legislator known for wearing bright pink or green dresses, though Getty acknowledged he was unsure which color was which.
