San Francisco, United States — Mirror Particle, a two-year-old startup, is building what its co-founder calls a "world model" of human behavior from scratch, arguing that the industry-standard method of prompting large language models to role-play as consumers is fundamentally unsuited to predicting what people actually do, according to TechCrunch.

What does Mirror Particle's world model claim to do?

The company provides brands with an AI engine meant to predict consumer behavior and the reasoning behind it, TechCrunch reported. Rather than producing a snapshot of a target demographic, Mirror Particle says it tracks how a group's motivations change over time as it moves through real-world experiences. "We don't want to capture the static person," co-founder and CEO Abhivyakti Ahuja told TechCrunch. "We want to capture the changing person. That means capturing the longitudinal data on how people are changing, what triggers are changing them and to what degree." If a segment isn't shifting, she added, "that's also a signal."

How is this different from LLM role-play approaches?

Ahuja told TechCrunch that fine-tuning an LLM already trained on hundreds of billions of data points cannot meaningfully redirect its behavior with a comparatively small dataset. "It's like bringing a super soaker to Niagara Falls," she said. She also argued LLMs model written language rather than lived experience. "LLMs are modeling written language, but humans are made of visual perception, spatial reasoning, social intelligence," Ahuja said, adding that relying on them risks surfacing insights based on what humans don't notice.

Mirror Particle's model draws on a proprietary mix of client customer data, current events, pop culture and social media, TechCrunch reported, and emphasizes "revealed behavior" — what people actually do — over self-reported survey answers.

Who else is competing in behavior-prediction startups?

Mirror Particle enters a field that has drawn large sums over the past year, per TechCrunch: Simile raised $200 million at a $2 billion valuation; Aaru raised $88 million at a $1 billion valuation; and Humans&, which announced a $480 million seed round in January at a $4.48 billion valuation, launched a product called Persimmon to model human behavior.

What is Mirror Particle's funding and business model?

TechCrunch reported that Mirror Particle has raised an angel round and says it is close to closing its first venture round. Like its competitors, the company's initial go-to-market strategy targets market research and brand and product strategy — categories where corporate budgets for these insights already exist, according to the report. TechCrunch noted the approach could, for example, help a beauty brand refine ad copy based on how a demographic's motivations are shifting rather than a fixed profile.

What happens next at TechCrunch Disrupt?

Mirror Particle is set to compete in Startup Battlefield 200, TechCrunch's startup competition, at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 in San Francisco, running October 13–15, according to the outlet's report.
