2 Killed, 10 Injured After Pickup Hits Wichita Youth Soccer Game

A pickup truck drove onto a soccer field at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 other people, according to Wichita police accounts relayed to NBC News.
What happened at Stryker Sports Complex?
Police said a dark Chevrolet pickup drove onto the field during a youth soccer game at the city-owned complex shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, striking children and adults who were on or near the field, according to NBC News. The outlet reported the crash unfolded at a public sports facility operated by the city of Wichita.
Who were the two people killed?
The dead were identified as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson, Kansas, a city about 30 miles northwest of Wichita, a Wichita police spokesperson told NBC News. The spokesperson said the two were not related to each other, meaning they were apparently in different places on the field or sideline when the truck struck them.
How many people were hurt, and how badly?
Ten other people, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were hit and hospitalized, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said, according to NBC News. Moses described their injuries as non-life-threatening, a distinction that separates them from the two fatalities but does not minimize the scale of a single vehicle strike hitting a dozen people across a range of ages, from young children to senior adults.
What did witnesses see and hear?
Erica Case, whose 9-year-old son was playing on an adjacent field during halftime, told NBC News she first heard an engine revving, then several "boom" sounds. "I saw the truck hitting things. I saw debris flying in the air," she said. "I don't know if it was a cone, a chair or a person, but you could see matter flying as the truck was barreling through the soccer field at a decent rate of speed."
Case said she initially mistook the sounds for gunshots. "The moment that I recognized that that wasn't gunshots, that that was bodies, I lost it," she told NBC News. "I lost it because it wasn't just adults. It was also children."
She also described bystanders stepping in before paramedics reached the scene. A nurse who was the mother of another child on the field shouted that she needed to help the injured, Case said; Case told her she would watch her son while the woman went to assist. Case said it took roughly 10 minutes for emergency services to arrive, during which bystanders began aiding victims, including what she called "a lot of silent heroes" who performed CPR or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on people who had been struck.
What caused the truck to drive onto the field?
As of NBC News's report, police said they were investigating what caused the pickup to leave the roadway or parking area and travel across the soccer field. The network did not report a determined cause, a charge against a driver, or further detail on the vehicle's path before or after the collision. NBC News said police were still working to establish what led to the crash.
Wichita police have not released additional details on the driver's identity or intent, according to the available reporting, and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains open.
