JustWatch, the company that built a guide for finding which service carries a given movie or show, launched its own streaming platform Tuesday, called JustWatch TV, according to Ars Technica. The service mixes free ad-supported movies with a paid ad-free tier and individual rentals.

What does JustWatch TV actually offer?

JustWatch TV lets users watch select movies for free with advertising, no account required, Ars Technica reported after testing the service. Titles available free with ads include Green Room (2015), Locke (2013), Sing Sing (2023), Fiddlin' (2018), Friday the 13th (1980), and Hotel Mumbai (2018). The outlet noted several of those titles are not free to stream anywhere else. Separate from the ad-supported library, JustWatch TV also offers individual movie rentals.

How much does the paid, ad-free tier cost?

JustWatch is selling an ad-free subscription for $4 a month or a one-time $50 lifetime payment, Ars Technica reported. A company spokesperson told the outlet the lifetime option is available for a "limited" time but could not say when it would end.

How big is the content library?

JustWatch SVP Quentin Carbonell told StreamTV Insider, as cited by Ars Technica, that the service carries "a few hundred titles across" its tiers. JustWatch TV has signed 30 content partners globally, including Paramount and New Regency, with plans to add more, according to the report. Ars Technica's reviewer described the library as "limited and somewhat dated" upon inspection, comparing it to Roku-owned Howdy, a similarly thin ad-free service priced at $3 a month that reportedly reached 1 million subscribers within six months of launch.

Why is a streaming guide building a streaming service?

JustWatch Group framed the launch as a feeder for its advertising arm rather than a stand-alone content play. The company's announcement, quoted by Ars Technica, said JustWatchTV "will provide even deeper audience data and insights for JustWatch Media, the group's campaign planning and buying service for film marketing campaigns across digital platforms like YouTube, Meta, and TikTok for studios, distributors, streamers, and media agencies." JustWatch Group said its underlying guide already serves 50 million customers, whose viewing intent data feeds that same ad business. Founder and CEO David Croyé said in a statement quoted by Ars Technica: "From the beginning, our vision was to create a single platform that directs fans to all of their entertainment options in one place. JustWatch TV will help fill in the gaps." Carbonell told StreamTV Insider the company aims for 100 million monthly users "in the years to come."

What do the industry terms mean?

AVOD (ad-supported video on demand): a model where viewers watch free content interrupted by commercials, the category JustWatch TV's free library falls under. First-party data: information a company collects directly from its own users — in this case, the viewing habits JustWatch TV generates to sharpen ad targeting for JustWatch Media. Lifetime subscription: a single upfront payment, here $50, that waives recurring monthly fees for as long as the service operates, as opposed to the standard $4 monthly plan.
