Syrian Raid Near Damascus Kills Five ISIL Suspects, Two Officers

Two members of Syria's internal security forces were killed and five were wounded Thursday morning during a raid on a suspected ISIL cell in Rankous, a town in the western Damascus countryside, the Syrian Interior Ministry said, according to Al Jazeera.
The ministry said security forces moved on the cell around 6 a.m. local time. Suspects inside refused to surrender and opened fire, triggering a firefight that residents told Al Jazeera's Heidi Pett lasted two to three hours. Some of the wounded officers were seriously hurt, Pett reported from Syria.
What happened in Rankous on Thursday?
Security forces launched the operation against the cell in the western Damascus countryside early Thursday. The Interior Ministry said the group refused to surrender, and gunfire followed. Residents who spoke to the local outlet Syria Now said forces imposed a curfew afterward and made additional arrests in the area.
How many people were killed or arrested?
The Interior Ministry's count and residents' account differ. Officials said five alleged ISIL members were killed and six arrested, with weapons and explosive belts seized. Residents told Al Jazeera the cell numbered about nine people, with two killed, two escaping, and an unknown number wounded. Two security officers died and five were wounded, the ministry said.
By the numbers (Interior Ministry account):
- 2 security officers killed, 5 wounded
- 5 suspected ISIL members killed, 6 arrested
- Weapons and explosive belts seized in the raid
Why is Syria targeting ISIL cells now?
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government joined the 90-member international coalition against ISIL in November, Al Jazeera reported, roughly six years after Syrian Kurdish-led forces helped defeat ISIL's territorial hold in the country's north. Since then, Syrian security forces have reported a series of foiled plots as they work to dismantle ISIL networks. Pett said ISIL has repeatedly targeted Syrian security forces, often attacking buses and vehicles carrying personnel, along with a smaller number of attacks on civilians.
What other ISIL plots has Syria stopped this month?
The Interior Ministry said it also disrupted an ISIL plot in the Damascus countryside and dismantled a cell in the Houla area of Homs earlier this month, according to Syria Now's reporting cited by Al Jazeera. Those plots reportedly targeted places of worship and security patrols. On October 6, authorities said they arrested Khaled Raed Birouni — known as Abu Hassan Dushka — in Hujaira, in the Damascus countryside, identifying him as the group's top military commander for Homs. Officials accused him of planning attacks there, including a December 2025 mosque bombing in Homs' Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood that killed eight people and wounded 18, Syria's Health Ministry said.
What should residents watch for next?
- Whether the Interior Ministry releases further details reconciling its death toll with residents' lower count of nine suspects.
- Any follow-up arrests tied to the Rankous curfew reported by Syria Now.
- Additional raids in the Damascus countryside or Homs province as the coalition-backed campaign continues.
- Whether ISIL claims responsibility for the Rankous clash, as it has for past attacks on security convoys.
