Amazon announced five new or updated Echo devices on Wednesday, including a bedside clock, the company's first Alexa-branded photo frame, and a new Echo Studio with a built-in camera, according to WIRED. The lineup is available for purchase now.

Here is what changes for Echo owners and shoppers starting this week.

What did Amazon announce?

Amazon unveiled the Echo Dot ($100), Echo Studio With Home Camera ($250), Echo Show 16 ($500), Echo Time ($200), and the Alexa Photo Frame ($200) at a media event in New York City, WIRED reported. Panos Panay, Amazon's senior vice president of Devices and Alexa, said the releases are meant to give the company's Alexa+ assistant "premium" hardware to run on. "I don't think anyone's really doing AI at all in the home, and if they are, they aren't doing it well," Panay said, according to WIRED.

Panay told WIRED that roughly 200 million people now use Alexa+, the AI-updated version of Amazon's voice assistant, and that usage has climbed sharply since the upgrade: people talk to it two to three times more often, cook with it five times more, and listen to music through it three times more than before.

What's new in the Echo Dot?

The redesigned Echo Dot now costs $100, double the price of the original entry-level model, WIRED reported. Amazon says the speaker has a stronger full-range driver with 50 percent more bass, four beamforming microphones instead of three, and the company's AZ3 chip to help Alexa isolate a user's voice in a noisy room. The new Dot also works as a Thread border router and supports the Matter smart-home standard, and it can extend Wi-Fi if paired with an Eero router, according to WIRED. It comes in four colors, three of them pastel tones that Amazon's design head, Chris Green, told WIRED were chosen to feel "calm" given data showing nearly half of U.S. adults report weekly stress. A Kids Echo Dot with the same hardware in different designs is also available, bundled with Amazon Kids+ content filtering.

What does the Echo Studio's camera do?

The Echo Studio With Home Camera is Amazon's first smart speaker with a built-in camera, a feature previously limited to its Echo Show screen devices, WIRED reported. At the New York event, Panay demonstrated the camera by using it to video call his father, according to WIRED. WIRED's report did not detail additional camera specifications, such as resolution or privacy controls, beyond the video-calling function shown.

What are the Echo Time and Alexa Photo Frame?

The Echo Time, priced at $200, is Amazon's new bedside clock built around Alexa+. The Alexa Photo Frame, also $200, marks Amazon's entry into the AI-connected photo frame category, joining devices such as digital frames from other manufacturers that let families display and share photos remotely. WIRED's report did not list detailed screen sizes or storage specifications for either device.

When can people buy these, and what's the timeline?

Amazon announced the full lineup on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and all five devices were listed as available for purchase the same day, according to WIRED. The announcement follows Amazon's early October rollout of updated Kindles and Alexa-enabled tablets, part of what WIRED described as a broader push by Amazon to position its device lineup as more premium. That push also explains why hardware prices have risen: this summer, Amazon raised prices on some existing Echo devices and blamed a memory-chip shortage, WIRED reported.

Why is Amazon raising Echo prices now?

Panay told WIRED the strategy is tied to how people now use Alexa+. As conversations with the assistant get "deeper," he said, the devices running it need better microphones, speakers, and processing power to keep up. Amazon says it has sold more than 100 million Echo Dots total and that in 2026 alone, people spent more than a trillion minutes listening to music through the device, according to figures Panay shared with WIRED. Whether buyers accept Echo Dot's doubled price tag, or see the new camera and photo-frame categories as useful additions, will likely shape how far Amazon pushes this premium strategy into next year's lineup.

For households adding more voice-activated gear to the bedroom or living room, the shift also raises a broader question about how voice AI tools are evaluated for sound quality and responsiveness — a category where services like ElevenLabs have built tools specifically for natural-sounding voice AI outside the smart-speaker market.

Amazon did not immediately respond to WIRED's report with additional technical specifications beyond what Panay and Green described at the event.
