West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test in Mirpur on Saturday, chasing down a target of 170 in 35.1 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, according to Al Jazeera.

Brandon King finished unbeaten on 81, a career-best innings built on 10 fours and a six off 115 balls, as the visitors wrapped up the win on the fourth day. Bangladesh had set the target after being bowled out for 142 in their second innings, with the hosts resuming the morning at 79-6 and a lead of 106.

How did West Indies bowl Bangladesh out twice?

Spinner Jomel Warrican was named player of the match after taking 4-63 in the second innings, following a five-wicket haul in the first. Captain Roston Chase added 5-36 in the second innings, his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, as Bangladesh folded in 48.4 overs.

The breakthroughs on the final morning came quickly. Jaker Ali, who top-scored for Bangladesh alongside Nayeem Hasan, edged Warrican to slip, where Chase took the catch after Ali had made 22 off 34 balls. Nayeem survived two dropped catches off Chase — on 21 and 29 — before going on to reach his maiden Test half-century off 87 balls with four boundaries. He eventually fell for 52 off 91 balls, caught by Joshua Bishop off Chase while attempting to clear long-on.

In between, Warrican trapped Hasan Mahmud lbw for eight after a 26-run stand with Nayeem, and Chase removed Taijul Islam, who made eight, to leave Bangladesh at 127-9. Shoriful Islam finished unbeaten on seven as the innings closed.

What did the captains say about the result?

Chase said the team's focus was on winning the series after a difficult start. "The guys were determined, even though we didn't have a good start in the first innings," he said, according to Al Jazeera. "We lost the lead, but we were still determined to fight back and try to win the game, and that's what we did."

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto pointed to fielding lapses as the difference. "All three departments didn't do well, especially in the field. These things can happen sometimes, but I believe the intention and preparation were quite good," he said. "Going forward, we need to look at those areas and work out how we can do better in these conditions."

By the numbers

  • 81* — Brandon King's career-high score, off 115 balls with 10 fours and a six, in the fourth-innings chase.
  • 170 — the target West Indies chased down in 35.1 overs for the win.
  • 142 — Bangladesh's second-innings total, bowled out in 48.4 overs.
  • 5-36 — Roston Chase's second-innings figures, his fifth Test five-wicket haul.
  • 4-63 — Jomel Warrican's second-innings figures; he also took five wickets in Bangladesh's first innings.
  • 52 — Nayeem Hasan's top score for Bangladesh in the second innings, his maiden Test half-century, off 91 balls.

Where does this fit in West Indies' recent Test form?

Al Jazeera's report frames the win as part of "their encouraging run in red-ball cricket," a result that extends the team's recent momentum in the format. The margin — eight wickets, with more than 13 overs to spare in the chase — gave West Indies control of the series with one match remaining.

What to watch in the second Test

  • Whether Bangladesh adjusts its batting approach after twice folding under 150 in Mirpur.
  • Whether Chase and Warrican, who combined for the bulk of the wickets in both Bangladesh innings, can repeat that form on a different surface.
  • Whether King's innings signals a more settled middle order for West Indies heading into the second Test.
  • Whether Nayeem Hasan, who top-scored with 52 despite two dropped chances, retains his spot and role in the Bangladesh order.

The second Test will determine whether West Indies close out the series or Bangladesh levels it after the eight-wicket defeat in Mirpur, per Al Jazeera.
