Derby police arrest driver after car ploughs into group of pedestrians
Incident
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a car struck multiple pedestrians in Derby on Monday night, police said. Emergency crews were called to Normanton Road at 7:35 p.m. following reports that a silver Vauxhall Astra had mounted the pavement and hit a group of people before colliding with a shop front.
Casualties
Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed that five pedestrians were taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Three remain under observation, while two have since been discharged. A sixth person was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver sustained slight injuries and was assessed at the Royal Derby Hospital before being taken into custody.
Investigation
Detectives said they are not treating the incident as terror-related but have urged witnesses to come forward. Forensic officers cordoned off a 100-metre stretch of Normanton Road overnight while they examined tyre marks, debris and CCTV footage from surrounding businesses. We are keeping an open mind as we work to establish exactly what led to this collision,
Superintendent Sarah Wilson said in a brief statement. Officers have also appealed for dash-cam or mobile phone footage recorded in the area between 7:20 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.
Community Reaction
Local residents described hearing a loud bang followed by screams. Shopkeeper Ahmed Khan, whose grocery store overlooks the crash site, said the scene was chaotic
as bystanders rushed to help victims sprawled on the pavement. People were shouting for blankets and water. It’s a miracle no one died,
Khan told reporters. City councillor Baggy Shanker praised emergency crews for their rapid response and called for traffic-calming measures on Normanton Road, a busy arterial route that links the city centre with the suburb of Normanton.
Next Steps
The suspect remains in police custody as of Tuesday morning. Investigators have applied to magistrates for additional time to question him. Normanton Road reopened shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday, but a small police cordon remains around the damaged storefront.
